The MUD we always wanted to play Regarding Time and Spacefrom the perspective of an Abehan Student of Magic, before the joining of the worlds. The world of Kivekia is one where basic physics and magic come together in an almost uncontrolled manner. Across the world, energy ripples almost randomly over the oceans, raw power vibrates through the earth and mana flows through the air as if it were water in a river.Of course, the concentration of magic varies, but it is not a force to be ignored. Indeed, places where magic is most potent have been theorised to be either completely devoid of life, or inhabited by some of the strangest, and perhaps most powerful, creatures in the world. The known lands, presently the central landmass of Palatania, the northern continent of Abeh, and western continent of Ossaca, are believed to be located on an area of very low magic concentration, though there is more than enough for a trained sorcerer to manifest energies far greater than lesser minds could comprehend. Indeed, the sightings of potentially devastating parallax storms beyond the coastlines are fearsome enough to know that just beyond the horizons lay untapped sources of magic powerful enough to destroy anything that dare approach. There is argument to say that magic is not the entirely random force. Indeed, it is believed by many that expeditions that have dared to venture towards the rims of the known lands have seen evidence to the contrary. Stories of storms of pure energy have been told, with clouds of magic swirling together and breaking apart, forming patterns that react to each other across the skyline. These signs of primitive intelligence are limited in accuracy, gathered as they were by High Level Seers of the Order using their powerful telepathic abilities to contact the adventurers whose lives were later claimed presumably by the sheer strength of the forces at work beyond the horizon. It is believed, almost conclusively by all, that the magic that is utilised by those of Kivekia is of a low grade, dormant almost perhaps. It is in a state that can be controlled by mortals using ancient methods taught only by the veterans and the greater healers of the lands. However much magic is used for spell casting and other arcane arts, the mortal understanding of it is still lacking in almost every respect. Studies within the Order have concluded a number of small points, however, that may in time to come lead to an understanding of the forces of mana that will allow us to venture out beyond the horizons. We know that magic interferes with what could otherwise be predictable physical aspects of the world. Matter can be destroyed, created and rearranged when magic is used either in controlled situations or through accidental expenditure of magical energies. Life is another aspect of our existence that is penetrated by magic. Wounds can be sealed and heavy damage to flesh and limbs repaired if a powerful enough spell, or enough lesser powered spells, are known. Artificial life can be summoned forth to serve magic users, and it is even said that life can be instilled into lifeless corpses, though the inner workings of such powers are yet to be quantified. Perhaps the most complex aspect of our research lies in Time. It passes us by, allows progression from past through present to future, but, most importantly, it seems to be completely saturated by magic. If magic does indeed have intelligence, then it is aware of its power and has chosen to transcend the need of time as a backbone to its presence around us. Kivekia itself appears to be a large enough body of land and water to maintain a constant position within time, or rather, to maintain a constant flow of time around it. The familiar calendar used across the known lands of Kivekia, consisting of the seventeen months, each broken into thirty-five individual days, is based on this very fact. However, it is known that this is not a reliable starting point when it comes to the natural ageing of the mortals of Kivekia. It would seem that magic has the ability to envelope individuals at specific points in time, and then to remove its shroud at a later time. The saturation of the magic within this system is such that this is not noticeable to most, and it has taken the Order’s finest to even theorise this as a conclusion. It is odd, but observations have always shown that those taken into the stasis that magic provides are always returned at a time that is chronologically later, rather than previous. The inference is that magic does indeed contain an understanding of time within it. Examination of the magic phenomena will continue hereafter. Though the casualty, or rather, loss rate of those that are assisting is increasing, it is believed that the way of the Order will prevail, and ultimately full understanding will be attained.
